Don Mclean이 동경하던 가수였던 '버디 홀리 (Buddy Holly)'의 비행기 사고사가
모티브가 되어 만든 앨범이다.
앨범 수록곡중 타이틀 곡인 'American Pie'는 1972년 4주간 차트 정상을 차지한다.
앨범 [American Pie]는 돈 맥클린의 뛰어난 작곡실력과 가사를 선보이며
실력있는 싱어송 라이터로 이름을 알린 앨범이 된다.
2015년, 그래미 명예의 전당에 오르고 RIAA가 선정하는 '20세기 최고의 곡 5'에 올랐던
'American Pie'의 가사 원본이 뉴욕 크리스티 경매에서 120만 달러(14억 원)에
낙찰되기도 하였다.
앨범 수록곡중 'Vincent (Starry Starry Night)'는 화가인 빈센트 반 고흐를 소재로
만든 곡이다.
싱글로 발매된 'Vincent (Starry Starry Night)'는 빌보드 싱글차트 12위,영국차트 1위까지 올랐다.
특히 국내에서 인기가 많은 'Vincent'는 한국인이 가장 좋아하는 팝송 37위에 선정이 되었다.
